Once again Electric Time Company has been called upon to provide a complete Tower Clock restoration. Brown University in Providence Rhode Island asked us to restore their iconic Aldrich Field tower clocks for their new Aquatics and Fitness Center.
The four 6’ diameter tower clocks had seen better days. Aided by historic photographs, the cast dials were stripped and repainted using their original color scheme. The broken glass panels were recreated and reinstalled. Reproduction hands were manufactured to replace the missing and broken hands. Updated lighting was added to provide a nice even glow in the evening. The four clocks were fitted with Electric Time Company C1-MI tower clock movements and equipped with our 99B-MI automatic clock controller for years of maintenance free use.

The Intersection of Engineering and Art is the title given to the “latest face of technology” feature on Electric Time Company by Brian Fuller, Editorial Director of EE Times. Brian is on a year-long cross country tour of the United States in a GM Chevy Volt. He is interviewing technology innovators during his tour and recently stopped by the Electric Time Company factory in Medfield Massachusetts.
The Drive for Innovation tour, sponsored by Avnet Express and UBM Electronics has stopped at a number of places since beginning in Chicago in July of 2011. Brian was impressed with the aesthetic quality of our engineering and the technology we use in designing and building tower clocks and street clocks.

Bill Nye, a 1977 graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca NY, and world famous scientist and teacher, has presented his alma mater with an Electric Time Company clock featuring a Solar Noon Indicator. The 10’ diameter clock has been over 10 years in the making – a collaborative effort with Electric Time Company, Bill Nye and the students of Cornell University.
Using Bill’s initial design drawings, Electric Time Company created a clock to accommodate solar noon indicator equipment. A large polished tube is connected from the back of the clock dial to the roof of the building. On the end of the tube at the roof are shutters that open to accept light from the sun when it is at its highest point of the day – solar noon. The sun on the face of the clock dial illuminates brightly at solar noon.
Bill Nye’s interest in solar noon and timekeeping stems from his father’s and mother’s love of science and sundials. To see more on this topic and pictures of the clock installation see; Telling Time.

How cute is this custom exterior clock?
We all fell in love with this precocious frog – catching a fly on a nearby leaf. The intricate pieces were all cut in-house on our water jet machine. The lucky recipient of this clock is the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples Florida. Don’t you just love the colors that make up this fun clock? Ten colors were painstakingly matched to the customers specifications for this one-of-a-kind clock. The clock just shipped – we are looking forward to seeing it in the museum. What a fun addition!

One question that is frequently asked – How can our clock be seen at night if we install a non-illuminated clock? These photographs are an excellent example of illuminating an Electric Time Company silhouette style tower clock. The clock tower is washed with light from nearby parking lot fixtures. We have also seen great examples of “wall washing” lights focused from below the clocks.

How to improve an antique? Have Electric Time Company provide a clock for it! The ultra-hip restaurant and nightclub LAVO in New York City asked ETC to place clock faces in an old rusty antique wrought iron sign frame. After painstakingly restoring the frame and recreating missing parts, two 30” back lighted clocks were added. The frame was carefully painted and highlighted and the clock rings were fitted to the frame. The double sided clock now proudly hangs above the LAVO entrance on 58th Street, between Madison and Park Avenues

Clocks, clocks and more clocks! As 2010 winds down we thought about all of the clocks manufactured at Electric Time Company this year. One project in particular stood out – The Village at Breckenridge in Colorado.
Designed with the architects at O’Bryan Partnership of Frisco, CO, Electric Time Company manufactured four 11’ diameter canister clocks. The clocks were specially designed to accommodate the front access only requirement. Due to their size, the clocks were driven to Colorado from our factory in Medfield, MA on a dedicated flatbed trailer with a special oversized load escort! The tower clocks were quickly and professionally installed by R.A. Nelson & Associates, the general contractor on the project.
The Village at Breckenridge is located at the base of Breckenridge Mountain. The iconic clock tower was added as part of a major facelift at the resort in 2010.

Electric Time Company of Medfield MA was honored to be selected as the lobby clock manufacturer for the recently opened Waldorf-Astoria in Orlando Florida . Installed in 2010, the four sided clock is a unique feature in the center of the lobby. Built to create its own legacy, the clock sits atop a mahogany column, grounded with a lovely blue velvet banquette. The clock itself features fine finishes, including Satin and Polished Nickel plated finishes and bronze and pearl painted finishes. The top of the column is crowned with a sparkling cut crystal piece, fitting for the grandeur of the lobby. And as a nod to the iconic lobby clock in NYC, the Orlando clock features the same chime melody. Electric Time Company was proud to design and manufacture the clock and chime equipment which will grace the Waldorf-Astoria lobby for many years to come.
